Recently Dr. Oz had a show on thyroid cancer, the fastest growing cancer in women. Dr. Oz mentioned that the increase with this particular cancer could possibly be related to the use of dental x-rays and mammograms. He demonstrated by showing that the apron the dental assistants use to lay over you, during dental x-rays, has a little flap that can be lifted up and wrapped around your neck. Most dentist offices don’t bother to use it.
There is also something called a “thyroid guard” which can be used during mammograms. By coincidence, a friend of mine had their yearly mammogram yesterday. She felt a little silly, but asked about the guard and sure enough, the technician had one in a drawer. When asked why it wasn’t routinely used— the answer? “I don’t know. You have to ask for it.” Well, if she hadn’t seen the show, how would she have known to ask?
Someone was nice enough to forward this to me. I hope you pass this information onto your friends and family.
